Sunderland won the first Tyne-Wear derby this season at the Stadium of Light, courtesy of an own goal from Nick Woltemade. The Black Cats were looking to do the double over their rivals, with a win at St. James' Park.
Newcastle United started the afternoon above the Black Cats, with the Magpies sat in 11th. Sunderland were in 13th, but a win would see them go above Newcastle and up to 11th.
Eddie Howe's side started the better out of the two, and Anthony Elanga picked up the first chance of the match. His early header went over the bar and gave the Magpies fans early encouragement.
In the 10th minute, a poor pass out from the back by Luke O'Nein was intercepted by Nick Woltemade, who played in Anthony Gordon, who coolly slotted home, giving his side a 1-0 lead. The home fans in St. James' Park were celebrating what felt like a gift from the Black Cats, but Newcastle did not care, and they were in front. Sunderland were growing into the game, but at half-time, Newcastle United were 1-0 up.
12 minutes into the second 45, Sunderland levelled through Chemsdine Talbi. The 20-year-old scored from close range to make the scoreline 1-1, and the Black Cats had their tails up, and were searching for a winner.
The game was exciting and action-packed, but the biggest moment came in the 90th-minute. Brian Brobbey took a shot towards goal, which was saved by Aaron Ramsdale, but Brobbey scored the rebound. The away end high up at St. James' Park erupted, and Sunderland had defeated Newcastle United once again.
Regis Le Bris' team had done the double over the Magpies, and Sunderland are now 11th in the Premier League table, one point above Newcastle.
Following the international break, the Black Cats face Sunderland at the Stadium of Light. Spurs lost 3-0 at home to Nottingham Forest, and they have not won a Premier League match this year.
Newcastle United travel to Selhurst Park to face Crystal Palace next time out, as Eddie Howe's team look to bounce back from their disappointing derby day defeat.
Newcastle United's wait for a Premier League win against Sunderland continues, with the Magpies last winning over their rivals in the league back in 2011.
