Luton Town win game of the season contender

Reading hosted Luton Town in both teams' first EFL League One fixture of the season.

Last season, Reading finished 12th in League One, while Luton Town narrowly missed out on the play-offs. The Hatters finished seventh, missing out on the top six by one point.

The game had an exciting start, with Jack Wilshere's side taking an early lead. A lovely low-driven strike by Jake Richards gave his side the advantage on the road. But the lead did not last long. Jack Marriott put the hosts back on level terms two minutes later.

In the 31st minute, Marriott was on the scoresheet once again. He pounced on a poor pass from Kasey Palmer and drilled home from range. Seven minutes later, Marriott had his hat-trick.

Great work from Kyreece Lisbie found himself and Marriott through two-on-two, and the former Colchester United winger played through his striker, who coolly slotted home.

38 minutes gone and Reading were 3-1 up against the Hatters. It was a dream start for the hosts, while Wilshere's side had plenty of work to do.

Kasey Palmer pulled his side back into the game five minutes into the second half, making up for his mistake that led to the Royals' second.

Two minutes later, Palmer pulled his side back level, making the score 3-3 after 52 minutes. The six-goal thriller was already a game-of-the-season contender, and over 35 minutes remained.

In the 90th minute, the scoreline was 3-3, as both sides were seemingly set to take home a point.

But Luton Town had one last attack...

Gideon Kodua curled a shot that rattled the crossbar, but it fell back to Richards. The 19-year-old set up Kodua for a second shot, which he rifled home.

From 3-1 down, Luton Town were 4-3 up and had secured three points in style on the opening day.
