Before matchday 46 in the National League, York City were top of the table with 107 points, two points clear of second-place Rochdale, who were on 105 points.
With only two teams being promoted from the league, one side goes up automatically, while the second gets promoted through the play-offs. Rochdale vs York City was guaranteed to see one team crowned as champions, while the other was in the play-offs.
The Minstermen knew that either a draw or a win would secure them a spot in the Football League, while Rochdale had to win the match to go up as champions.
The last time the two met in the league back in November, York City were 4-1 winners at home. But the feel at the Spotland Stadium was that the game was a final, with the winner taking all.
The Dale won in the 99th-minute against Braintree Town last week to make sure the title race went down to the final day, and to set up a huge clash against the Minstermen. The week prior to facing Braintree, Rochdale scored a 90th-minute winner, so the side from Greater Manchester were used to scoring late goals, but they were hoping the game against York would be more comfortable for them.
The game kicked off, and the cagey affair saw York City have more attackive chances in the first half, but the deadlock was yet to be broken at half-time.
The scoreline was 0-0 in the 94th-minute, and York were on their way to promotion, but a huge twist happened...
In the 95th-minute, Emmanuel Dieseruvwe scored his 26th league goal of the seaosn, and he put the Dale in front with less than one minute to go in the game. A huge pitch invasion erupted, and Rochdale thought they were going to be promoted deep into added-time.
But, due to the pitch invasion, the referee added extra time onto the game, which helped York City search for a potential equaliser.
In the 13th minute of stoppage time, a goalmouth scramble descended on Rochdale's goal. A cross found the head of Callum Howe, who saw his header saved but pushed back into play, before Josh Stones' shot towards goal was blocked, but it was over the line, as deemed by the referee. The away end erupted, and there was another pitch invasion, this time from York City's fans.
The players, staff and fans were all celebrating a huge goal, which had surely booked the side's spot in the EFL.
The full-time whistle was blown, and York City were promoted. The Minstermen were confirmed champions, and Rochdale were going into the play-offs. The game had a heartbreaking ending for the Dale, who thought they were going up, but York City destroyed their hopes deep into additional time.
The late equaliser for York sealed promotion in the most dramatic way possible, and it will certainly be a historic match for the league and the Minstermen.
Both sets of fans would have felt every emotion possible during the game, but right now, it's party time for York City.
