Has Chelsea's large spending caught up to them?

Chelsea have often spent heavily in transfer windows under BlueCo, but this summer, things could change. Xabi Alonso's appointment as Chelsea manager has reportedly seen him play a role in player arrivals and departures, changing Chelsea's recruitment strategy instantly.

Under BlueCo, Chelsea have often pursued younger players whom they believe they can develop into world-class talents, and potentially sell for a profit down the line. Some of their recent signings have included Alejandro Garnacho, Liam Delap, Andrey Santos, Moises Caicedo, Enzo Fernandez and Cole Palmer. With these signings, the players' ages have played a role in the Blues' pursuit, believing they can be developed and rise in transfer value to boost Chelsea's spending power. However, this summer, things could change.

Numerous players have been strongly linked with a move away from Stamford Bridge this summer, with Tyrique George, Filip Jorgensen, Alejandro Garncaho and Andrey Santos all up for sale.

Chelsea have reportedly been close to breaching PSR rules on numerous occasions, which has forced them to sell players this summer to avoid further punishments. With Andrey Santos closing in on a £50m move to Manchester United, they will make a significant profit on him. Tyrique George's departure will also be pure profit, with him being an academy product. Alejandro Garnacho has also been linked with a move away from Stamford Bridge after a disappointing debut season with the club.

Xabi Alonso is reportedly interested in Granit Xhaka, whom he managed at Bayer Leverkusen. The experienced midfielder is a different profile of player as to what Chelsea have looked to sign over recent seasons, but the experience could help them massively going forward.

Chelsea have a relatively young squad, and bringing in an older figure to the dressing room could help them massively going forward.

With Chelsea looking to sell multiple players this summer, it could show a need to raise funds at Stamford Bridge to allow signings to walk through the door. With heavy spending occurring across previous seasons, it had to come to an end at some point.

This summer could be the ending point of that, but only time will tell. With Alonso undoubtedly wanting to put his fingerprints on the current squad, players will seemingly be cut from the team and see their futures elsewhere if the Spaniard does not want them at the club.
