Yesterday, Norwegian side Bodø/Glimt hosted Manchester City in the UEFA Champions League. The Cityzens were looking to bounce back from their Manchester Derby defeat at the weekend, while the home side were looking to cause a huge upset.
This season is the first time Bodø/Glimt have competed in the Champions League, but they had failed to win any of their six matches played going into the clash.
The temperature throughout the game was sub-0 degrees, putting the City players out of their comfort zone. The home side made a brilliant start and capitalised on City's weaknesses 22 minutes into the game, taking a 1-0 lead. Kasper Høgh, who has been linked with moves to the EFL, put his side in the lead. He found himself unmarked at the back post, where he headed low into the ground, beating Gianluigi Donnarumma.
Less than two minutes later, things got even better for the hosts. Høgh doubled Bodø's lead and got his second of the game. In the 24th minute, the Norwegian club were in dreamland, and did not show any signs of slowing down. With every attack they looked threatening, and Man City looked vulnerable. The hosts created multiple chances to score a third before half-time, but the goal never came in the first 45.
However, in the second half, Bodø continued with their strong pressing and threat when attacking. Jens Petter Hauge added a third to the scoreline in the 58th minute. The hosts deserved the lead, but the question was now, can they hold onto it?
Two minutes on from the hosts' third, City's Rayan Cherki converted from outside the box, giving Pep Guardiola's team a lifeline. Rodri dealt the away side a big blow in their hopes of getting something out of the match, as he picked up two yellow cards within a minute and was sent off.
City's tricky challenge was made even more difficult, with them down to 10-men.
Bodø/Glimt thought they had scored a fourth from a swift counter-attack, but the goal was disallowed due to offside. Although they only scored three, they could have netted a lot more.
The full-time result was Bodø/Glimt 3-1 Manchester City, with the Cityzens needing to win against Galatasaray next week to have any chance of reaching the top eight spots in the UCL league phase.
