Benfica hosted Real Madrid as both sides met in their final match of the league phase of the UEFA Champions League. Real Madrid could qualify automatically for the round of 16 with a win or a draw, while Benfica had to win to have a chance of reaching the play-offs.
Jose Mourinho's Benfica needed three points to give themselves a chance of reaching the play-offs, along with other results to go their way. Despite needing to win, the Portuguese side found themselves 1-0 down after 30 minutes, with the competition's top goalscorer Kylian Mbappé netting the first in the game.
But Madrid's lead did not last long, as six minutes later, Andreas Schjelderup brought his team level. Things got even better for the hosts, as they took the lead deep into added time in the first half, as Vangelis Pavlidis scored a penalty to put Benfica 2-1 up at the break.
Real Madrid needed a win or a point to reach the top eight, so they were also playing with something on the line. In the 54th minute, Benfica scored a third through Schjelderup, and the side from Lisbon was on their way to reaching the play-offs.
However, their hopes were short-lived as Kylian Mbappé, once again, scored for Real Madrid and brought the game level.
A two-goal advantage lasted just four minutes, with 32 minutes remaining for Benfica to restore their two-goal lead, as Madrid searched for an equaliser.
In the 97th minute, Benfica players thought that they were going through to the play-offs with a win, however, they then realised that they needed one more goal. On goal difference, Marseille were making the 24th and final spot to reach the next stage of the competition.
Goalkeeper Anatoliy Trubin was sent up the pitch to help his side create one last chance to score, which would send them through to the play-offs. A 98th-minute free-kick crossed in by Fredrik Aursnes met the head of Trubin, who steered home to put Benfica 4-2 up. The crucial goal resulted in Mourinho's side reaching the Champions League play-offs in the most dramatic way possible.
Benfica could face Real Madrid in the play-offs of the competition in the next round.
