Antonín Kinský made his UEFA Champions League debut for Tottenham Hotspur last night, as Spurs travelled to Atlético Madrid.
Igor Tudor's side were seeking to use the Champions League as a way to boost the squad's morale and take their minds off the poor league form recently. The side from London went into the clash at the Wanda Metropolitano following five successive losses in the Premier League.
When the starting XI was announced, there was an eye-catching change in the team from Spurs. Antonín Kinský was named as the goalkeeper for the away side, with Italian keeper Guglielmo Vicario named on the bench.
Kinský last played for Spurs during a 2-0 loss away from home in the EFL Cup against Newcastle United. The change in net was hoping to inspire the squad, as they looked for only their fourth clean sheet of the year.
Six minutes into the match, Antonín Kinský made a huge mistake which cost his team a goal. The Czech goalkeeper slipped as he went to kick the ball, and Atlético Madrid scored soon after the mistake.
For Atléti's third goal, the keeper made a poor pass, which was intercepted by Julian Álvarez, who scored his side's third in 15 minutes. The Argentine was gifted a goal by Spurs' keeper, who had a nightmare start to the game.
Following Julian Álvarez's first goal in the game, Igor Tudor had seen enough of his goalkeeper and brought Kinský off for Vicario. It was a hugely disappointing performance from the 24-year-old goalkeeper, who will not forget his performance yesterday for a long time.
Tottenham Hotspur suffered a 5-2 loss away from home, and they will need to put in a splendid performance next Wednesday if they are to reach the quarter-finals. The winner of this tie will face either Newcastle United or Barcelona.
Each week, it seems like things cannot get any worse for Spurs, but each week, it does. Their poor run of form continues, and their next game is not any easier. They travel to Anfield on Sunday, with centre-backs Micky van de Ven and Cristian Romero both out due to suspensions.
