Manchester United's under-23 squad in 2022 was full of talent, and the side finished sixth in the Premier League 2. Many of the players in that squad also won the FA Youth Cup that year, with the under-18s.
The squad of players, four years on, are playing all over the world. Some are in the UEFA Champions League, while others are in non-league. Here is a list of some key players from the squad and where they are now.
Alejandro Garnacho:
The Argentine winger played 144 times for Manchester United's first-team, scoring 26 and assisting 22. During his time with the Red Devils, he won the FA Cup and EFL Cup, scoring in the FA Cup final against Manchester City. In the summer of 2025, he left Old Trafford and signed for Chelsea, signing for a fee of £40 million.
Matěk Kovář:
The goalkeeper departed Manchester United in 2025, signing for Bayer Leverkusen. In his debut season, he played once in the league and kept a clean sheet, and that season was when the club went unbeaten and lifted the Bundesliga title. After two seasons with Leverkusen, he then left the club and signed for PSV, where he has played 21 times in the Eredivisie this season. PSV are top of the league by 14 points.
Alvaro Carreras:
Alvaro Carreras is currently playing in the UEFA Champions League with Spanish giants Real Madrid. A successful spell at Benfica earned him a move to La Liga, returning to the club that he was at before signing for United. The young full-back has played 30 times this season and has a goal and an assist in his last two matches.
D'Mani Mellor:
D'Mani Mellor is currently playing in non-league football, playing for National League North side Macclesfield FC. The club are in the sixth-tier of English football and have caught the headlines this year for their huge cupset against Crystal Palace. The Silkmen knocked out the defending FA Cup winners 2-1, setting up a match against Brentford in the next round. Macclesfield's 2-1 win vs Palace is arguably the biggest ever upset in FA Cup history.
Hannibal Mejbri:
Hannibal Mejbri joined Burnley from Manchester United in 2024. He has played 21 times this season for Burnley, and also played at AFCON with Tunisia this campaign. Hannibal was a part of Burnley's squad that gained promotion to the Premier League after finishing second last season. Both the Clarets and Leeds United finished on 100 points, but goal difference saw Leeds finish as champions.
Kobbie Mainoo:
Midfield maestro Kobbie Mainoo is still at Manchester United and is an important figure for Michael Carrick since the interim manager's arrival earlier this year. The 20-year-old has played in all of United's last seven games, getting two assists. He also scored in the 2024 FA Cup final, doubling United's lead in the game, which was his first piece of major silverware with the club. Mainoo's future at United seemed uncertain under the reign of Ruben Amorim, but the English midfielder has got back in the team, and his career with the Red Devils is back on track after the appointment of Carrick.
Amad Diallo:
Amad Diallo moved from Atalanta to United back in 2021, and he had multiple successful loans before staying at United and fighting for his spot. The winger has been a key player for the club over the last two seasons, and he has 13 goals and 12 assists since the start of the last campaign. The Ivorian has played at wing-back, as a winger and as an attacking midfielder, showcasing his versatility.
Willy Kambwala:
Willy Kambwala left Man United in the summer of 2024 for Villarreal, completing a €10 million move. The centre-back featured 10 times across the league and FA Cup for United during the 2023/24 season, which saw him earn a move to La Liga. The defender has played 21 games for the Spanish side since making the move.
Anthony Elanga:
Anthony Elanga is currently playing for Newcastle United, after an amazing season with Nottingham Forest last campaign. The Swedish winger's £55 million move to the Magpies pocketed Manchester United around £7.5 million, after a sell-on clause the club agreed with Forest was activated. Elanga played 43 times during the 24/25 season, scoring six goals and assisting 12.
There were also notable names who played matches for the U23s throughout the 21/22 season, with those players being Dean Henderson, Phil Jones, xxx and xxx.
While the U23s finished sixth in the PL2 out of 14 teams in the northern league, members of the squad wrote themselves into history by being a part of the U18 team that lifted the FA Youth Cup.
