Kalvin Phillips is currently on loan in the EFL Championship with Sheffield United. The 30-year-old had a brilliant eight-year spell with Leeds United before leaving the club to join Manchester City.
During his time at the Etihad Stadium, Phillips lifted eight trophies and won the treble with the football club. He spent two seasons in the fold at Manchester City, which were the 22/23 and 23/24 seasons.
But Phillips' time at Manchester City has been hampered by injury, which led to him being sent on numerous loans. He played on loan at West Ham United and Ipswich Town last season, before landing at Sheffield United on loan this campaign in the second division.
The Blades are reportedly not looking to turn the loan into a permanent move this summer, which will see the midfielder return to Man City at the end of the season. The midfielder is on a big contract, which reportedly sees him earn £150,000-a-week. The weekly wage is a large sum, and teams lower down in the Premier League and football pyramid would struggle to justify that amount of money on someone who is injury-prone and not at the top of his game.
This could leave Manchester City in a dilemma this summer, with the player potentially not wanting to depart due to his contract. If no other club makes a substantial offer contract-wise, Phillips could look to stay put or leave on another loan again. But if Phillips is willing to potentially cut his wage, then a move could be made easier.
The 30-year-old has had problems with injury, which has hurt him over seasons gone by. He was a standout player during England's Euro 2021 campaign, and it ultimately earned him a move to City. But he has struggled for consistent performance-wise and staying fit, which has seen him drop out of the England picture and out of the Premier League.
Since moving to Sheffield United on loan, the midfielder has made just three league appearances, and he was sent off during the Steel City derby. His last appearance for the club was against Sheffield Wednesday, as he has been sidelined due to injury.
Phillips was in his best form when at Leeds United, and the Yorkshire side seem like they will avoid relegation to the Championship at this moment in time. Looking at signing their former star would help boost their squad ahead of next season, and Phillips would remain in the top-flight if he was to return to Elland Road.
City spent £42 million on the midfielder in 2022, so the club would want to recoup as much as possible in a transfer fee if he is to depart this summer.
Where do you think Kalvin Phillips will be at the start of next season?
