Millwall have officially announced the signing of 36-year-old midfielder Barry Bannan from Sheffield Wednesday. The Lions currently sit fifth in the table, and are chasing promotion to the Premier League this season.

The Owls find themselves in administration and are sat bottom of the EFL Championship, on -7 points. They have picked up only one win this season in the league, drawing eight and losing 19 of their 28 Championship matches.

Barry Bannan joined Sheffield Wednesday back in 2015, completing a move to the Yorkshire side from Crystal Palace. The midfielder has departed Wednesday after 10-and-a-half seasons with the club, as he returns to London. The new Millwall midfielder has played 28 matches this season in the league, scoring three and assisting three.

Bannan scored during Sheffield Wednesday's only league win this season, which came away against Portsmouth, as the Owls were 2-0 winners.

Millwall currently sit inside the play-offs in the EFL Championship, six points clear of Bristol City, who are outside of the play-offs. Millwall are five points behind second-place Middlesbrough, who are inside the automatic promotion spots.

The London side has only suffered one loss in their last seven, winning four of them. Their most recent game was a strong 4-0 home win against Charlton Athletic. Up next for the side in fifth is a home game against Sheffield United, who have suffered three defeats in their last four games.

After Sheffield United, the Lions travel away to face Wrexham, before taking on Sheffield Wednesday at Hillsbrough. Barry Bannan, on 14 February, could return to Wednesday to face his old team, for his new side Millwall.

With Sheffield Wednesday currently in administration, it is believed that the transfer of Bannan was completed to help maintain the club's finances. With the midfielder reportedly being a top earner, having his wages off the books would help the club massively. 434 appearances later, the 36-year-old moves on, signing for Millwall.
