Manchester United have officially appointed Michael Carrick as their interim manager until the end of the season. During the 2021/22 season, Carrick was the interim manager of the club for three matches, where they won two and drew once. The two wins were against Villarreal and Arsenal, and the draw was away against Chelsea.

Ruben Amorim was sacked on January 5th, following a 1-1 draw away against Leeds United. The Portuguese boss was in charge of United for 14 months, where he helped guide the club to a Europa League final.

Since Amorim was sacked, United are yet to win a game, drawing 2-2 away against Burnley and losing 2-1 in the FA Cup against Brighton.

Carrick returns to management for the first time since departing Middlesbrough in 2025. He was sacked by the Northeast club after being with them for two and a half years, where he helped take the club to a 10th-place finish, and miss out on the play-offs by just four points.

During his time with Middlesbrough, Carrick had a points per game ratio of 1.57, across his 136 matches managed.

Carrick's first game as interim manager of Man United will be at home against rivals Manchester City. The week after, the Red Devils travel to London to take on league leaders Arsenal.

The start will be tricky for the 44-year-old, as he aims to secure a Champions League spot at the end of the season with the club.

How do you think Michael Carrick will do as interim boss at Manchester United?
