Michael Carrick took charge of his first game at Manchester United as interim boss since returning to the football club, facing Pep Guardiola's Manchester City.

Manchester United entered the derby chasing three points to break into the top four before the 3PM matches. The Red Devils were looking to get their first win of the year and their first three points since Boxing Day.

The Cityzens went into the game drawing all of their last four league games, but were without a defeat in their last 13.

The first chance of the game fell to the hosts, as Harry Maguire sent a header towards goal, but his strike crashed against the crossbar. It was a positive side from the Red Devils, while City were yet to get going.

11 minutes in Diogo Dalot committed a nasty challenge on Jeremy Doku and received a yellow crd, however there has been lots of conversations around how the POrtuguese full-back was lucky to avoid a red card.

United netted first through Amad, but his goal was disallowed due to offside. It was an inspiring first-half performance from United, who were searching for the lead. Seven minutes on from Amad's disallowed goal, Bruno Fernandes saw a goal chalked off for offside as well. He, like Amad, rounded Gianluigi Donnarumma before cooly slotting home, but the linesman raised his flag and the goal did not stand.

At half-time, Carrick would have been the happier of the two bosses, with United creating numerous chances. City had not got going in the first 45, but were looking to change that in the second half.

Manchester United finally got their deserved breakthrough 65 minutes into the game, as a swift counter attack saw Bruno Fernandes play a pass through to Bryan Mbeumo, who dispatched low into the bottom right corner, putting the hosts in the lead. It was a deserved 1-0 lead for United, who were looking to win their first match in four.

Things got even better for the Red Devils, as Matheus Cunha delivered a superb cross into the box, and Patrick Dorgu made a magnificent run into the box to meet the ball and convert home. Old Trafford erupted as the home team, who were dominating, had deseredly taken a 2-0 lead. But, the scoreline should have been more for the Red Devils based on chances.

In added-time, Mason Mount slotted home to add a third to the scoreline, but his strike was disallowed for offside. United had three goals cancelled out because of offside offences, which was one of only a few disappointing things about the game.

Manchester United won the match 2-0 against Manchester City, and Michael Carrick's return to the Old Trafford dugout ended in a huge win. At the end of the game, United moved up to fourth in the table, but could drop in league position depending on other results.

City will be extremely dissapointed with their performance, looking like a completely different team to the one we have seen recently.
