On Saturday, the Silkmen hosted the FA Cup holders Crystal Palace at the Leasing.com Stadium. Macclesfield were huge underdogs going into the game, but the one cup competition where anything is possible is the FA Cup.

Macclesfield, managed by John Rooney, the brother of Wayne Rooney, took charge of the side in the summer. The team are currently 14th in the National League North, the sixth-tier of English football.

To get to the third round, Macclesfield have beaten AFC Totton and Slough Town in the first and second rounds.

The Silkmen opened the scoring in the first half through Paul Dawson, who found the back of the net before half-time. On the hour mark, the hosts doubled their advantage against the 2025 FA Cup winners, thanks to Isaac Buckley-Ricketts. Macclesfield were in dreamland, but they had half an hour to defend their lead.

Things got tense inside the stadium as Yeremy Pino scored from a free-kick, just outside of the box. His pinpoint strike found the back of the net, and the end of the game was a nervy one.

The final chance for Crystal Palace before the final whistle came through Adam Wharton, but his shot was blazed over the bar.

The full-time whistle triggered a huge pitch invasion, as Silkmen fans ran onto the pitch to celebrate their monumental win with their players and coaching staff. It was a cupset that will be remembered for many years to come.

Last season's winners of the competition had been beaten by a sixth-tier football team, who play regional football in the National League North.

Macclesfield will now be able to look forward to the fourth round draw with excitement, with plenty of Premier League and Championship clubs being in the hat.
