Javier Mascherano leaves Inter Miami with immediate effect

Javier Mascherano has left Inter Miami with immediate effect, the Florida side has confirmed. The Argentinian helped Miami win the MLS Cup final last year, against Vancouver Whitecaps.

Mascherano himself has said he left the club due to personal reasons, and his backroom staff have also left alongside him. "I want to let everyone know that, for personal reasons, I have decided to end my tenure as head coach of Inter Miami CF."

Just four months ago, Mascherano and Miami won the most prestigious domestic competition up for grabs for a Major League Soccer club, which was the MLS Cup. He helped guide the team to their first-ever MLS Cup win, which was a historic moment for the football club.

But, just seven league fixtures into the 2026 campaign, the former Barcelona star has left the star-studded side. Lionel Messi, Luis Suarez, Rodrigo De Paul and Sergio Reguilón are all playing for Inter Miami currently, and the side are hoping to retain their MLS Cup trophy.

Former Barcelona youth team coach Guillermo Hoyos has stepped in as Miami's interim head coach, as the search for Mascherano's replacement gets underway.

Inter Miami take on New England Revolution this weekend, as they begin thier era post Mascherano. Miami are four points off Nashville SC, who are top of the Eastern Conference. Messi and co are unbeaten in six of their seven league matches so far this campaign, winning three, drawing three and losing just one.

Inter Miami have drawn both of their last two games, with the results being 2-2. Their recent match was against New York Red Bulls, and the match prior was against Austin FC.

The match versus Austin was the first match at Inter Miami's newly-built Nu Stadium, which has a capacity of 26,700. The ground will be used at the upcoming 2026 World Cup.
