Ipswich Town have confirmed their promotion back to the Premier League at the first time of asking. The Tractor Boys went into the final day of the season knowing that second spot was in their hands, but they had to get the job done at home against QPR.
Kieran McKenna's side eased any concerns about missing out on promotion, as George Hirst scored his 11th league goal of the season just three minutes into the match. Six minutes later, Jaden Philogene boosted the Tractor Boys by scoring a second, and putting the hosts 2-0 up in less than 10 minutes.
The party-like atmosphere at Portman Road began with the Tractor Boys in the lead, eyeing a return to the Premier League after being out of the top flight for just one season. McKenna's men led 2-0 at half-time, and had to put in a professional second half to seal promotion against QPR.
The second 45 was comfortable for the hosts, who scored a third through Kasey McAteer. Ipswich Town's third goal secured all three points and sent them back to the Premier League. They have been automatically promoted out of the EFL Championship alongside Coventry City.
Both the Sky Blues and Tractor Boys will be keeping a close eye on the league's play-offs to see who will get promoted with them.
This season in the Championship, Ipswich Town won 23 of their 46 games and lost eight. They only suffered one loss in their last 15 league games, with their defeat coming against Portsmouth.
Kieran McKenna will now prepare his squad for a return to the Premier League, where they were relegated from last season. Just like Sunderland and seemingly Leeds United, the Tractor Boys will be looking to avoid relegation from the top-flight in their first season back in the league.
