Hashtag United Football Club were founded in 2016, by Spencer Owen. The club originally began on YouTube, with their matches being uploaded to the platform. They later decided to make a big step, by entering the football pyramid.
A statement released from the Isthmian League said: "The Isthmian League has received a written request from Hashtag United FC for the club to be relegated from Step 3 whether or not the club finishes in a relegation position."
The one-of-a-kind football club was created by YouTuber Spencer Owen, better known as 'Spencer FC' online. The club has seen years of success and has gained multiple promotions throughout the years, but the recent statement regarding their request for relegation is not good news.
Hashtag currently play at step three, three promotions away from reaching the EFL. The future of the football club has been questioned by people online as to whether the club is financially stable.
One unique point of the club is their online presence. Due to the team being founded online through social media, lots of their fans watch from around the world, and not in person. Therefore, getting people through the gates at games to support the Tags has been difficult since their formation.
Also, with no permanent home stadium, they have struggled to find a location and build a local fanbase from it. With no permanent home, this has led to multiple groundshares throughout their history, which could have potentially put off fans from following them week in week out.
What do you think lies ahead for the Tags?
