Gary Caldwell took charge of his first Wigan Athletic game yesterday since returning to the club. The FA Cup winner brought his time at Exeter City to an end after spending three and a half years with the club.

Wigan Athletic travelled to Arsenal at the weekend in the FA Cup and suffered a 4-0 defeat. After the game, their focus quickly shifted to Luton Town, who travelled to the Brick Community Stadium on Wednesday. Jack Wilshere's side were looking to pick up three points to push them towards the play-offs, while Wigan needed a win to climb out of the relegation zone.

The Tics were 22nd prior to kick-off and were facing Luton Town, who were eighth in the table. A win for the Hatters would put them a point away from the play-offs.

Wigan, who were at home, went into the game following a run of five straight defeats and were winless in the league in their last nine. The last time the Tics picked up a win was in 2025, winning on 29 December against Burton Albion.

The game was decided by one goal, which was scored by former Luton Town forward Joe Taylor. He was sold by the Hatters in the summer to Huddersfield Town, before signing on loan to Wigan in January.

During Taylor's spell with Luton, he failed to score in 13 league appearances. Since joining Wigan on loan, he has already scored four goals in seven appearances. His goal-scoring ability will be vital for the club as they look to climb away from the drop zone.

Caldwell's start to life at Wigan has been a bright start, but the Tics will quickly turn their focus to Stockport County, as Dave Challinor's side host the team who beat Luton in midweek.

How do you think Gary Caldwell will do for Wigan Athletic?
