Eddie Howe's time at Newcastle United comes to an end

Eddie Howe's time at Newcastle United has come to an end, following over four years in the North East. The 48-year-old joined the Magpies when the club was in the Premier League relegation zone and were winless in November. By the end of the season, the club were 11th and had safely avoided relegation.

In his second season, he helped guide Newcastle United to a domestic cup final, but the Magpies fell short against Manchester United. Despite the disappointment, it was a clear showing of what Newcastle were capable of, and they built on their Carabao Cup final loss to come back stronger.

Two seasons later, the Magpies ended a 70-year trophy drought by winning the Carabao Cup. Eddie Howe's side lifted silverware for the first time since 1955, winning 2-1 in the final against Liverpool.

Maybe Eddie Howe was the successor to his own downfall, following numerous successful league campaigns with the Geordie side. The pressure was on him and the club last season, following the departure of Alexander Isak, and a large summer spending spree was completed to help boost the side. But, instead of progressing, the team regressed on the pitch.

A 12th-place finish saw pressure mount on Howe, and his departure has been confirmed, with Matthias Jaissle set to replace the Englishman.

Reports have circulated that the manager's departure has been on the cards for weeks, but he would leave once a replacement was found.

Although Howe's tenure at Newcastle United did not end the way he would have wanted, his spell in the North East was hugely successful across the four years he was there. Most notably, the Carabao Cup final against Liverpool will stand out in the memories of Newcastle United fans and Eddie Howe, when it comes to the manager's time at the club.

Jaissle, if he is to be appointed, faces a huge challenge, with the league season beginning in less than a month. A rebuild has been linked for this summer, but the late managerial change has made it even harder.
