Brighton striker Danny Welbeck has triggered an option in his contract, which will see his new deal expire at the end of the 2026-27 season. His current contract was expected to run out at the end of the current campaign, but he will remain with the Seagulls for another season.
The 35-year-old joined Brighton in 2020 from Watford, and he has scored 48 goals in total, across 191 appearances. He has played the most matches in his career for the South Coast side, and has 30 appearances this campaign.
This season, Welbeck has scored 11 goals in 30 appearances across all competitions, scoring in both of his last two games. Brighton face Arsenal this evening at the AMEX Stadium, and Welbeck will be looking to score against his former club, who are currently top of the table.
Brighton find themselves in 12th this season, and have won both of their last two games. Their two recent wins ended a six-game winless run in all competitions. The Seagulls face Arsenal tonight, and then take on Sunderland, who are then followed by Liverpool.
All focus is on the Premier League, after Brighton were beaten in the last round of the FA Cup 3-0 against Liverpool at Anfield. The remaining fixtures in the league are difficult for the Seagulls, who still have to face five of the 'big six' in their last eight games.
The Seagulls are seven points off the European spots, so they could secure European football for next campaign, but it will be a difficult ask, with them currently sat 12th. However, if they win tonight against the league leaders, then they would climb to ninth in the table.
Danny Welbeck will be looking to score a goal in his third consecutive game tonight, with him currently having his joint-best goalscoring season in the league, with 10.
