Newcastle United were 6-1 winners against Qarabag in the UEFA Champions League this evening, with the Magpies finding themselves 2-0 inside eight minutes and were 4-0 up after 33 minutes.

Anthony Gordon scored a hat-trick inside 33 minutes, and the Magpies were 5-0 up at half-time. Although Qarabag were the first team to score in the second half, they could not find a second, and Jacob Murphy netted a sixth for his side, and the seventh of the game.

Eddie Howe's side take a comfortable 6-1 lead into the second leg, which will be played next Tuesday.

Anthony Gordon becomes only the third player in Newcastle United history to have scored a hat-trick in the Champions League, and the Englishman writes his name into history for the club.

The win should be enough to put Newcastle through to the competition's round of 16, and should ease the pressure on the club in what is a congested period for fixtures.

Eddie Howe's team travels to the Etihad Stadium this weekend, as they face Manchester City for the fourth time this campaign. With the Cityzens and the Magpies drawing each other in the FA Cup fifth round, there is a possibility the two teams could play each other seven times this season.

The huge result tonight brings complacency to the side from the North East of England going into the second leg. The comfortable lead allows Howe to potentially rest some crucial players ahead of their weekend clash against Everton after the second meeting with Qarabag.

Anthony Gordon's performance against the club from Azerbaijan was an impressive one, and it saw him secure his first senior hat-trick of his career.
