Manchester United have identified their midfield as a place that needs to be strengthened this summer window. The Red Devils will see Casemiro depart the club as a free transfer at the end of the season, and Manuel Ugarte's future with the club is in doubt.
Kobbie Mainoo is reportedly close to reaching an agreement with Manchester United to extend his contract with the club, which is a major boost for the club. Mainoo's minutes with the club were limited under Ruben Amorim, but under Michael Carrick, he has become an important player in the middle of the park.
The club has been heavily linked with multiple midfielders from across the Premier League, and the Red Devils will almost certainly sign someone in the centre of the park this window.
Some of the names linked with a switch to Old Trafford include: Sandro Tonali, Adam Wharton, Carlos Baleba and Elliot Anderson.
Sandro Tonali:
Sandro Tonali is reportedly looking for a move away from Newcastle United this summer, with multiple Premier League clubs interested in the Italian midfielder. Arsenal, Manchester City and Manchester United are seemingly interested in the former AC Milan midfielder, who has had an impressive time in the North East with the Magpies.
The 25-year-old was a part of Newcastle's squad that lifted the EFL Cup last season at Wembley, ending the club's 56-year trophy drought.
Tonali has played 47 times this season for the Magpies, with 11 of those being in the UEFA Champions League. In those appearances, he scored once, which was against Qarabag, as the side won 3-2 at home.
Carlos Baleba:
Carlos Baleba has been a name linked with United for some period of time, with the Red Devils being interested in the Brighton midfielder since last season. The 22-year-old has not hit the heights he reached last season, but the Seagulls midfielder could have been unsettled by the links with Manchester United.
The Cameroonian has played 29 games for Brighton this season, with 25 of those being in the Premier League. Baleba has only started two of Brighton's last six in the league, which were against Crystal Palace and Arsenal.
Adam Wharton:
Adam Wharton has been another name rumoured to move to Manchester United, and the Red Devils have held an interest in him since he was playing for Blackburn Rovers. The 22-year-old has played 41 games this season for the Eagles, and he helped his side lift the FA Community Shield at Wembley at the start of the campaign.
The defensive midfielder could be viewed as the perfect Casemiro replacement, with the England international impressing since moving to Selhurst Park. If he is to leave Crystal Palace this summer, he would love to depart by lifting silverware for the club in his final game, which could come in the UEFA Conference League.
Elliot Anderson:
Elliot Anderson has been a standout performer this season for Nottingham Forest, which has seen him rank as one of the most highly-rated midfielders this campaign. His impressive performances have put him on the radar of both Manchester clubs, who are seemingly set to battle for his signature.
There have been reports of a £65 million release clause in Anderson's contract, which will more likely than not be activated this upcoming window. Anderson has been so impressive this season that he is being discussed in England's starting 11 for the Three Lions' first World Cup game against Croatia.
Manchester United will always be an appealing club to players, but with Champions League football more likely than not being at Old Trafford, the appeal will only grow bigger. The club will be able to spend more money this window as well due to European qualification, and they have already set out some of their targets.
The Red Devils reportedly want to sign two midfielders, which could be two players named above.
Who do you think United should look to bring in this summer?
