FC Magdeburg travelled to Greuther Fürth on Friday in the Bundesliga 2, with both sides occupying the bottom two spots in the league table prior to kick-off.
Greuther Furth, who were the hosts of the match, sat bottom of the table, on 19 points from 20 games. Magdeburg were in 17th, with 20 points from 20 matches played.
The game was an opportunity for either side to climb out of the relegation zone with a win and look to build momentum in the second half of the season.
Going into the game, the hosts won their previous match, but the momentum of the win did not see them pick up three points in their most recent league fixture. Only one win in their last nine sees Furth sit at the bottom of the 2. Bundesliga.
Fürth took the lead after eight minutes thanks to Brynjar Bjarnason, but the hosts did not hold onto their lead for long. Magdeburg were rampant in front of goal in the first half and scored five in 20 minutes, seeing the away team lead 5-1 in the 34th minute.
The hosts responded by adding two goals before half-time, and at the break, the score was Greuther Fürth 3-5 Magdeburg.
A chaotic first half mellowed down in the second 45, with only one goal being scored. The home team got themselves back in the game, scoring their fourth in the 47th minute, but in the remaining 40 minutes, they could not score an equaliser. Magdeburg won the game 5-4 in one of the best matches of the season in the 2. Bundesliga.
For the away side, they had secured their fifth win across their last eight in the league, ending a two-game winless run. Magdeburg take on 11th-place Bielefeld next, with the two sides separated by only one point.
The win propelled Magdeburg up to 13th at full-time, but after everyone had played their fixture at the weekend, the side dropped to 15th, one point above Munster, who occupy the relegation play-off spot.
The 2. Bundesliga table is extremely close between 15th and 8th, with four points separating the two spots.
Where do you think both Magdeburg and Greuther Fürth will finish in the league this season?
