Celtic started the match in second place, but a win would put them level on points with Hearts of Midlothian, before the league leaders' 3PM match against Livingston.
Rangers would go level on points with Celtic if the away side won, who went into the game winning four of their last five matches in the league.
Celtic's Hyun-Jun Yang opened the scoring after a spectacular solo goal, where he dribbled through numerous Rangers players before scoring past Jack Butland. The South Korean's shot was high into the goal, and Celtic Park erupted with celebrations. Hyun-Jun had scored his second league goal in three matches.
At half-time, the Hoops were in the lead 1-0, as they were eyeing up a huge win at home against their biggest rivals.
In the second half, Rangers levelled in less than 10 minutes. Former Sporting and Everton striker Chermiti scored after 51 minutes, making the remainder of the game exciting for the neutral.
The Portuguese striker added a second goal to his and Rangers' tally for the match, with the away side finding a 2-1 lead nine minutes after levelling.
18-year-old Tottenham Hotspur loanee Mikey Moore added a third goal to the scoreline for Rangers with just under 20 minutes left of the game, securing the three points for Rangers on Derby Day. The Glasgow Derby result gives Hearts the opportunity to move six points clear at the top of the table, if they win against Livingston.
Both Celtic and Rangers are now joint on 38 points after 20 matches in the league, and they also both have a +13 goal difference. However, Celtic are second and Rangers are third.
Danny Röhl's team have won five of their last six league games, losing to Hearts who are first. The loss away against the league leaders is the only Scottish Premiership defeat the side in third have suffered in their last 15.
Wilfried Nancy had a difficult start to life in Scotland, failing to win any of his opening four matches. He has been in charge of eight games, winning only two.
Danny Röhl has helped to turn Rangers around since his appointment, as the team now focuses on back-to-back league games against Aberdeen.
